ORTHOTICS

ORTHOTICS

Orthotics are functional shoe inserts that are designed to promote structural integrity of the foot and lower extremity. Orthotics re-distributes the pressures on the bottom of the foot, and help to control the abnormal biomechanical forces that cause lower extremity pain and disability. Orthotics have been shown to be successful in the treatment of many overuse injuries and malalignment syndromes including:
We use the Foot Management, Inc. Lab

Orthotics are custom designed from each individuals foot and modified based on a persons functional biomechanics (how they walk). We devise our orthotics by carefully evaluating and measuring foot and ankle joint motion in standing and non weight bearing positions. Finally, we observe you walk to examine gait patterns and to see how your foot functions and determine if orthotics are even necessary.

"With Karen, you are in good hands, literally and figuratively. She's a competent, caring therapist."

Molds of your feet are made with plaster or foam impression trays and sent to a lab for fabrication. Here we work with the lab to select appropriate materials (rigid vs. semi-rigid) to construct your orthotics. Depending on your evaluation, your orthotics will be adjusted (posted) so your foot is placed in its optimal functional biomechanical position.

The result is a custom foot orthotic, designed specifically for your foot!!

FAQ's about Orthotics

Are they the same inserts that I can by at the neighborhood drug store?

No. They are custom fit and designed for your foot only. Think of them as prescription glasses for your feet.

How do I know if I need orthotics?

Talk to your doctor. If you are having chronic pain symptoms, orthotics may help. However, if you are not experiencing any discomfort or pain, chances are, orthotics are not necessary.

Does insurance pay for them?

Many insurance carriers do cover the cost of orthotics, however, sometimes there are limitations. For instance, some insurances limit you to one pair of orthotics every three years. Others may limit the type of orthotic that is ordered. We suggest you check your own individual policy.

"She (Karen) got me through two knee replacements and a neck problem. She's just delightful."

How long do they take to make?

The initial evaluation for the orthotics takes about 45 minutes to an hour. After that, it takes about 2 weeks for the lab to make the orthotics and send them back to us.

Can this process be expedited?

Absolutely! We can ask the lab to expedite your order, however there will be an added fee to cover the express shipping.

Do I have to buy special shoes for them?

Biomechanical foot orthotics are preferably used with athletic, walking, or casual style dress shoes or boots. “Lace up” type shoes are best. If you are concerned if your particular shoes will work well, bring them with you during your evaluation.

Will they fit in my dress flats and heels?

No. Because of the depth of the orthotics they will not work well in dress shoes.
